5 Stars Solid product
As the other Amazon reviews concur, the WD Elements is a great product. Unlike many of the other externals out there, this one has a strong metal case to it, not some flimsy piece of plastic. It does have a larger footprint for your desktop, but won’t easy tip over or slide around like the other “book” styles out there.

Easy setup that utilizes Windows’ own device drivers, the 1 TB version comes pre-formatted to FAT-32. Formatting to NTFS works great, but expect the process to take several hours.

This drive runs nearly silent and only warms slightly after continuous use. After loading it about three-quarters full, I recently ran a check-disk to search for file errors and/or bad sectors. She came back clean as a whistle!

The only real downside to this drive is the lack of Firewire or eSata connections (both available on similar yet more costly models), neither of which I could use with my computer anyhow. USB 2.0 isn’t lightning fast, but is more than adequate for my purposes.

I highly recommend the WD Elements to anyone looking for an affordable, quality external hard drive.

4 Stars good solid unit – and a trillion bytes!
Western Digital Elements 1 TB USB 2.0 External Hard Drive WDE1UBK10000N (Black)

I immediately formatted this drive for NTFS, largely to torture test it since most problems with hard drives occur very early on. It took 10 full hours partly because USB2 ports are not very speedy communicators. At the end of the format, the case was only somewhat warm – kind of surprising since it has no fan. I’ve had no problems since, the drive is quiet, and it appears to be quite sturdy.

My only complaints are that the activity light is in the rear (why?) and that you have to lay the drive flat because the long narrow sides are very slightly curved. Even if you remove the rubber padded end pieces, it’s still curved and won’t stand up. On the other hand, I can’t knock it over this way like I’ve done with my other external drives.

I like the fact that you can turn off the drive by simply unplugging it from the USB port (or waiting out the standby period). The power plug is very small and is not likely to block other AC outlets.

If you want the little WD icon to appear in front of the drive letter in Windows Explorer and My Computer, but you have deleted the Autorun feature that came on the drive (which I did while formatting), you can download it from WD’s website and install it on the newly formatted drive. WD also offers a utility download that could be helpful to retrieve data in case of problems. I’ve never had a WD drive fail but that’s probably just dumb luck.

4 Stars It`s good deal
I think this item has good price and in good deal ,but it`s not fast enough that`s only problem i seen ,good package ,good design ,totally is good.

3 Stars Element not my best choice
I picked the element because I wanted plenty of back-up room. As a USB 1TB unit, I find it very slow to write. That is my fault because I know the conbination of mega storage and USB results in slow saves. I also don’t understand why the only power/activity led is in the rear of the unit. Other than that, the Element is well constructed and operates fine as the USB device it is.
