Onkyo HT S3100 5 1 Channel Home Entertainment System Set of Seven Black

Onkyo HT S3100 5 1 Channel Home Entertainment System Set of Seven Black

The HT-S3100 covers today’s key entertainment options. The HT-S3100 has a trademark amplification design that puts power and precision before all else. Onkyo’s High Current Power Supply (H.C.P.S.) concept ensures that you will always have the power to respond to the wide dynamics of surround sound. When the sound is attenuated in a conventional amplifier, the audio signal drops close to the noise floor at low volumes, thereby tainting the signal. Onkyo’s Optimum Gain Volume Circuitry adjusts the gain so that less than half the standard amount of attenuation is necessary. The gloss finish of the speakers accentuates the minimalist styling of today’s displays. An equivalent technology from Dolby Digital, Pro Logic II, also brings you multichannel sound from regular stereo, for a more expansive home cinema experience. CinemaFILTER restores the correct tonal balance for playing a movie soundtrack in the smaller confines of your home theater. CinemaFILTER can be used with DTS and Dolby listening modes, and is easily activated from your remote control. If you use the OR-EQ equalizer button, you’ll get a more powerful, direct sound from movie sources. 1 Star Onkyo is junk, and they don’t care
I purchased Onkyo’s HT-S3100 home theater system on February 6, 2009. On May 15 the receiver failed. After being put on standby mode for about two days, to save electricity, all of many attempts to turn it back on to use it have been unsuccessful. It’s apparently “fried.” The Onkyo web site offers a telephone number to call for technical assistance. I’ve called it 5 times in the last eight days (through 5/29/2009) and am each time invited by their recording, since alive person never comes to the phone, to leave a telephone number at which to be called back. Onkyo has not called back once. Their stuff is junk, they know it, and apparently they have no intention of honoring their warranty. Anyone know if Bernie Madoff owns them?

5 Stars Great Deal for the Money
I have owned this system for about 4 months now and I feel that is an adequate length of time to give an accurate review.

I read reviews and did in store tests for just under a month before buying this. I originally was interested in the base Sony model, but after testing it at the now discontinued Circuit City, I saw the Sony was no match for this Onkyo. The Sony wattage is always over-exaggerated, with it being extremely evident when doing a side by side comparison.

Here is a quick breakdown on the pro’s + con’s.

Pro’s:

Amazing sound for the money

-Blu-Ray live concerts will blow you away

Above average bass (but not the best for the $)

Extremely easy setup

Lengthy wire cords (Have to buy extra wire w/ the Sony)

Easy to use remote

Con’s:

No HDMI’s

-This can be overcome by using HDMI from your source (PS3 or cable box) to your TV and optical cable from there to the console. I have it set up this way and no signal quality is lost, guaranteed…a optical cable does carry Dolby Digital and DTS signals.

Large main console (You may face placement issues)

I am very pleased with my purchase and have 0 regrets to this day. I know you won’t either.

5 Stars Sweet Surround Sound on the Cheap
First things first. This is a great surround sound system in a box! Plus, it was pretty inexpensive. Onkyo is known for their great surround sound systems, and this one is no exception. I have an HDTV, but this system does not have an HDMI connection, but I knew that when purchasing. I simply bought a really inexpensive optical cable from here at Amazon to connect the system to my TV. The audio quality is excellent, and the system has plenty of settings to mess with. I have an Xbox-360 and PS3, and the 5.1 sound pumped out of this thing really puts you in the game. I can’t recommend this unit enough! You still reading? Buy this thing already!

5 Stars Good deal
It comes with a decent price and all the ins and outs you want for your home theater needs. The A/B speaker controls allows you to set up that extra set of speakers outside for the afternoon bbq. Clean and clear sound as expected. Very happy consumer.

5 Stars Great System
We needed a new speaker system when my DVD surround sound system kicked the bucket after 5 years. The speakers wouldn ‘t work with any other system, so we decided to buy something that we could plug everything into. This system is great. It ’s nice to be able to hear our Playstation, VCR, and DVD’s all in surround sound. Easy to assemble. I did a lot of shopping around before buying. I found that Onkyo is the best low-end system around here and what I paid was lower than average price for a refurb system. Works great. We’re very happy with it. Delivery was within 7 business days.

5 Stars Great Space Saver TV
I love my TV. It’s very slim and compact. It sits really nice on my kitchen counter without taking up very much space. I love that it’s white and matches all of my appliances.

5 Stars Outstanding small TV s
small TV/dvd…..good picture light weight can take anywhere you want.

easy set up….out of the box and plug in.

I was looking for a small white TV for the kitchen and found this one. We hooked it up to our cable. When I turned it on the picture was fuzzy, even on the digital channels that are usually HD, so at first I thought I had received a model that wasn’t HD. However, I found that there is a setting called “video label” that wasn’t turned on to HD as the default setting. Once I set it for HDTV for cable, then I started receiving an HD picture on the digital channels. Even the channels that are analog and not HD look fine now. I also had to change the default color scheme from cool to warm to get the perfect coloring for faces. Now the picture is great! It’s the perfect size for the kitchen. You do need to place it away from the stove and the sink.

3 Stars NOT A WALL MIOUNT
Don’t get suckered into buying this TV and the wall mount COMBO that Amazon tries to sell you I did only t find out that IT NOT a WALL MOUNT TV its a table top , sure you can convert it to a wall mount by opening up the Case and drilling hole s in it like I did but I’m sure I voided the warranty , But anyway once I went the the motions and converted to a wall mount it works great great color etc….

3 Stars Disappointment
We recently bought the white 19 inch Toshiba TV/DVD which was delivered promptly. It worked fine for 2 weeks and then we lost the picture. Talking to Toshiba we were informed that we had to send the TV to its repair center where it would be repaired free of charge – BUT we had to pay for packing and shipping costing us $ 62. A new Tv should work longer then 2 weeks and if it breaks right after delivery Toshiba should pay for the shipping (which they did not do)

Had we bought the TV at a nearby shop we could have returned it and would have recived a new one – without paying!!!! This is the danger of having products shipped.

4 Stars Does the job but with some quirks
Bought this to replace my old Samsung DVD player that lacked blue-ray.

The model has a good match with what I wanted. Small standard form factor so it can be stacked, in-built receiver and some audio in that I make use of.

I set it up and tried it with the only blue-ray movie I had at hand, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. The player reported that it couldn’t play the format which made me wonder if the unit was dysfunctional. Made sure I had the latest firmware and called support to check if this movie had issues but that was a wasted hour.

Well, fortunately I tested other movies before returning the unit and they all play fine. Guess I’ll have to wait for a firmware update before I have another go at that movie.

My personally biased list would be:

Pros

* Netflix and Pandora streaming

* Small and quiet

* Dual optical in (one for my DVR one for my Logitech Squeezebox)

* Remote can handle basic functions on my Samsung TV

* Reasonable price/performance

Cons

* Buttons on unit on the front top of the box instead of front panel

* Slow start-up of blue-ray movies

* Seems to loose track of where you stop a movie on power down

* Wireless LAN adapter sometimes loose connection despite static IP

* Didn’t play Benjamin Button movie (see above)

* Audio out HDMI or speakers, not both

2 Stars Disapponiting sound. I’m returning it.
I’m annoyed at having to pay another $80 for the wireless dongle, and also at the lack of HDMI input, but the deal-breaker is the boomy sound of the speakers no matter which sound mode I choose. Even female newscaster’s voices are overly boomy. I’d be willing to use the system without the sub, but the satellite speakers sound anemic without it.

I’m not a sound snob. The $299 Panasonic HTIB I’m replacing sounded great(but no Blu Ray).

Guess I’ll have to add a separate BD player to the Panasonic and put up with the clutter. The Samsung system is unlistenable. It’s great that they hit a marketable price point with this BD-HTIB system, but it’s a dismal failure. I can’t believe the other reviews, unless I was sold a different version of the Samsung HT-BD1250.

5 Stars Just what I wanted.
Bought a Samsung LN52A650 before xmas which I thoroughly love and have been debating what audio to match it up with. Blu-ray and 5.1 were a must but buying both a player and 5.1 amp plus matching speakers/subwoofer can get pretty spendy. TA-DA…this thing shows up. Not being 5.1 savvy before this I wasn’t prepared for the rear speakers to pretty much stay quiet but when they get the right feed its awesome.

My set up:

DirecTV HDDVR hdmi to the LN52A650 for broadcast TV.

BD1250 hdmi to LN52A650 for BD/DVD/CD/IPod/Pandora/FM/camera/etc.

Network cables wired direct from DSL modem to BD1250, LN52A650 and HDDVR. (The wife loves Pandora…check out their website if you love music and aren’t familiar with them.)

Optical audio from DirecTV HDDVR to HT-BD1250 if I want to listen to 5.1 from DirecTV. Note: It says in the LN52A650 documents that going from it to another audio system is always at best “stereo” no matter what type of connector you use. The heck with that …I went optical from the HDDVR to the 1250. Ratatooie via StarzHD sounds 5.1 fantastic.

This new setup let me “retire” my old Sony “stereo only” amp, an old Panasonic CD player, a Panasonic “progressive” DVD player and a couple of tall Sony speakers. (That stuff is now hooked up and rockin’ in the garage.) The vacated shelf space is now occupied by perfect sized wicker baskets that my wife found that are holding much of our DVD collection.

I still use the 3 remotes because I haven’t figured out how to get all the functionality I need without them. I usually watch ESPN so, as I’ve always done, I hit the “ON” button on the DirecTV remote and it fires up the TV and the HDDVR. I left the speakers on the TV set to “on” so on start up the broadcast TV sound comes over them. Note: The DirecTV remote will turn the HT-BD1250 on if you set it up but you have to move the switch at the top, etc., etc….pain in the butt.

At first having to use one of the Samsung remotes to fire up the 1250 bothered me but I’ve changed my mind. The reason? We have TV watching visitors from time to time so for them to just plop down, hit the DirecTV “ON” button and start watching “without” the surround sound booming away is my preference. The LN52A650’s speakers are good enough. What’s cool is that if they pop in a disc it automatically fires up the 5.1 and the TV speakers shut down. If you want to listen to a broadcast over 5.1 just hit tools and select the 1250 for sound.

The “Any-Net” feature enables the 1250 to be available for use from many of the menus on the Samsung remotes. Also the volume can be adjusted by any of the remotes, including the DirecTV remote. Pretty easy!

And last but not least hitting the “Off” button on the DirecTV remote shuts the HDDVR, LN52A650 AND the BD1250 off. Apparently the “Any-Net” talking between the TV and the 1250 must tell it to take a break too. I really like that…no one can inadvertantly leave the amp on.

Question to any of you with a similar TV and Blu-ray. I’m not really seeing any “dramatic” difference between the 1080i HD stuff I get off the dish (which is stunning by the way)and a blu-ray movie. Should there be?

4 Stars So far so good, with caveats
After deciding on a Samsung HTIB system to integrate with my 2-year-old Samsung 46″ HDTV, I came across this HT-BD1250 system at Best Buy with all the features I wanted (Bluray, surround sound with wireless to the rear speakers, Anynet+ integration, iPod integration), plus a few that I decided were “nice-to-have” (wireless network integration/Pandora/Netflix). Once I realized I would need to add the Samsung SWA-4000 wireless speaker amplifier and additional HDMI and optical cables for integration with my TV and HD/DVR cable box, the total package through Amazon was by far the best deal and way to go.

First quick note: You DO NOT need anything other than BASIC HDMI cables, which when purchased as a package here with Amazon are 80+% cheaper (even with the shipping charge from the third-party vendors) than if you buy them at Best Buy or other brick/mortar. DON’T BELIEVE THE HYPE on so-called “higher end” HDMI cables.

As for the HTIB system itself, I found that the documentation guided me through most of my installation/cabliing scenarios, and everything worked pretty much the first time once I powered everything up. I needed to make a few calls to Samsung tech support to get everything configured the way I wanted (I had some specific questions about the video/resolution modes switching between HD and non-HD inputs), but the support was English-speaking and reasonably competent. (I only got one “bum steer” from their tech support when I was making what turned out to be a user error on my part with the iPod integration, but the tech also didn’t identify it correctly and wanted me to send the unit in for service at my own expense…not an acceptable option. I later walked away from it for a few hours and then returned back to it with a clear head, and figured out my error in using the setup menus, and it turned out all was well after all.)

I should probably mention my wiring/integration setup: I have a Samsung LN-4661F HD TV, a Motorola HD/DVR cable box from my cable company, and now my Samsung HT-BD1250 HTIB. Cabling is as follows: HDMI Out from the Motorola HD/DVR cable box to HDMI In 1 on the TV (CATV audio and video are integrated on the HDMI), HDMI Out from the HD-BD1250 HTIB to HDMI In 2 on the TV (for DVD/BD video), and Optical Audio Out 1 from the TV to Optical Audio In 1 on the HD-BD1250 (to feed the CATV audio back from the TV to be reproduced through the HTIB’s sound amplifier).

I attempted to use a “standard” USB wireless network adapter to integrate with my home wireless network and found that it was unable to detect it; I suspect I could have made it work with some additional initial configuration first on my laptop, but I ended up scrapping that idea and I simply ordered the Samsung Wireless adapter for this unit, and it integrated perfectly with my home network in minutes. If you’re really tech-savvy and think you can get a “standard” USB wireless adapter configured to work with this, I suppose you could try to do so and save $30 or $40, but for $79.99 the Samsung WIS09ABGN adapter works right out of the box and is a supported solution.

As for the wireless network/Internet integration itself, I’ve tested Pandora and it works well; haven’t tested Netflix on demand yet. I also have yet to be able to figure out how to get integration with my PC via wireless to work as a source input (like to access music/multimedia I have on my PC), but it’s an advertised feature of this system and I’m confident I can hack my way through and make that work eventually…not a priority for me, though, just another “nice to have”.

The iPod integration works fairly well, but I’m a little disappointed that I was not able to figure out how to make “Shuffle” functionality work…I seem to be stuck playing my music in the order it’s stored in my playlists. Not sure yet if this is a limitation or if I just haven’t figured out how to do it yet.

The wireless speaker connection to the rear speakers with the SWA-4000 configured well pretty much the first time (I just had to play with the power cycling upon initial configuration) and the sound has been loud and clear. I did experience exactly one sound dropout on it the first day which immediately resolved and has not recurred, but it got my attention and I’m concerned about it based on reviews I read of other Samsung HTIB systems with wireless rear speaker connections. We shall see.

Configured out of the box, sound to the rear speakers only comes out if the input source provides it (like from a Dolby 5.1-enhanced DVD or BD), but I found that by cycling through the Dolby Effect Modes on the remote to the “Matrix” setting, I can hear sound through all 5 speakers all the time…exactly what I want, and the sound is great.

Another quick item to mention: I tested a couple of “standard” DVDs and the “1080p upscaling” feature of the BD player works well. As a result of this, I plan to only choose the added expense of Bluray discs in cases when I know there will be real value added, either feature-wise or sound/picture-wise (example, I purposely chose The Dark Knight as my first Bluray disc purchase). For my 45-year-old eyes and ears, upscaled DVD will be more than adequate in most cases.

Finally, I found that even with Anynet+ capability, I still needed to access all 3 of my remotes (TV, HTIB, and CATV) to control all needed functionality. Samsung support informed me that Anynet+ capability would allow integrated power on/off and basic volume/channel control, but it would not allow advanced function control on my TV such as P.SIZE, etc. Keep your expectations realistic on what Anynet+ will and won’t provide. I solved this by also purchasing a Logitech Harmony One universal remote (which I have reviewed separately), and this product, while expensive, is a true one-remote solution for my new home theater setup, and one I would recommend highly.

Bottom line (for this reviewer): For me, the HT-BD1250 HTIB was not a true one-box solution. However, after adding the SWA-4000 wireless speaker amplifier, 2 inexpensive HDMI cables and 1 inexpensive optical audio cable, the Samsung WIS09ABGN adapter for wireless network/Internet integration, and the Logitech Harmony One universal remote, I am now extremely pleased with the result, and I look forward to using my new Home Theater every day after work. I feel like I’m finally fulfilling to potential of the HD TV that I purchased 2 years ago…and I now know that was certainly NOT the case with my old setup of just the TV and my HD/DVR box with a 5-way component cable providing the connection.

The Samsung HT-BD1250 HTIB is a good solution if you do your research and you set your expectation levels properly.

Review update from author:

I spoke to Samsung Level II tech support, and they informed me that (a) PC integration is not available – the placard included with the system is “not exactly true”, and (b) Shuffle functionality on iPod is not available, despite the fact that Level I support told me I should be able to “use any feature that I can use conventionally on an iPod”. Again, “not exactly true”.

These are not showstoppers, but I am disappointed in those 2 shortcomings. Not enough to return the unit, but enough to hold my rating at only 4 stars instead of 5.

Review update #2 from author:

Signed up for a trial subscription of Netflix, and tried the Instant Queue/Streaming to my HTIB. It works well, but we definitely found that the picture quality was not nearly DVD quality (let alone BD quality). We watched National Treasure 2. I’m sure this has to do with the speed of my Internet connection (<3Mb/sec) and my 802.11g wireless network (I don’t have 802.11n on my older router). Not enough to ruin the movie for us, but definitely a factor worth noting.

Still, having Netflix Streaming On Demand for a subset of their movie offerings is a nice entertainment option for us.

Review rating still stands at 4 stars out of 5 for me.

4 Stars Lovin it!
I’ve had this system for a couple of months now and I love it. It has good sound and is a good complement to my LN52A650. The only thing I don’t like about it (and based on my googling it’s not the system but the disc), the auto resume function doesn’t work with most of the blu ray discs I watch. Works fine on non blu ray but be prepared to restart most blu rays from the beginning every time you stop it. I use this system’s remote as the universal to control the TV so there’s no clutter. It has some pretty cool features to make sure you optimize the sound and I can’t wait to get the wireless adapter so I can stream Netflix and Pandora!

5 Stars Good Price – Quality relation
Goo sound, great quality for a little amount of money, by far the best in its price segment

5 Stars Excellent low-cost home theatre
I read the reviews of previous purchasers, and they were all positive. This system has worked just as advertised. Good sound, good features, low price. I especially like the front USB port for a flash drive.

4 Stars great for the price! Slow load time!
We love this speaker/DVD system. We got it to replace our old shelf cd system and got a DVD player as a bonus (even though we didn’t need it). It is great for the price. We are not audio experts and sounds good to us.

Two cons: 1. It takes a really long time to switch between modes or start playing from power on. Close to 20 seconds until it states playing.

2. The other issue I’ve found is when connecting our tv audio (via RCA cables) to the speakers the sound is very tinny. I don’t know if it is the cable I’m using or what, but my other attached devices sound great (via coaxial).

With those two small cons I would still recommend this set up for those wanting a cheap unit for good sound.

4 Stars Great system for a great price even though there’s a few cons
The one and only pro to this system is the sound. It is phenomenonal for the cost of the system. This sucker packs a lot of bass, almost too much bass at times. I primarily use mine for playing CDs over DVDs so this review is more in regards to CD use.

The cons are numerous but minor. So much so that I can live with them in comparison to my last craptacular RCA RTD258 system (see my review for that one). Here are few of the more noticeable cons for me:

*Proprietary speaker connections. The wires are not the kind that you slip into a slot and are easily spliceable. These end in a clunky color coded plastic knob that you connect into the back of the system. I hate to think what am I going to do when one of these suckers breaks… Also, there’s a limited amount of wire so you have to make do with what they give you. The rear speakers have a substantial amount of wire over the front speakers. I also discovered even though the speaker connectors are color coded and the speakers labeled, they’re interchangeable without sacrificing sound.

*Slow response and disc load time, but not half as slow as the RCA I replaced this with. It’s still a bit frustrating but not so much that I can’t live with it.

*No volume control for each independent speaker. I give the RCA credit in this regard. I was able to individually adjust the volume for each speaker: left, right, front, back, center, and bass. Not an option with this unit.

*No bass, treble, balance, or equalizer controls that I am aware of. All you get are presets(i.e. lounge, jazz, rock) which I absolutely hate. They never sound right or appropriate for the music it purports it should be used for. I primarily listen to electronic music and I’m very particular about what sounds I want highlighted. To add insult to injury, it doesn’t even offer an electronic preset.

*No 1.5 speed with sound. This was an awesome feature I’ve only seen on my JVC DVD player that I’ve had for years (and it still works like new). Maybe it’s not offered anymore. You could watch a movie at the 1.5 speed setting and still hear what is being said, which brings me to my last con.

*Only one AUX jack. Most systems I have seen offer at least two so I can connect my JVC DVD player, my record player, and/or my headphone jack to play music from my computer or Sansa mpe3 player. It does come with an iPod dock but what use is that to me if I don’t have an iPod?

Overall, a vast improvement over the RCA RTD258 I replaced. The sound is great and for under 200 clams I got what I paid for and I’m pretty satisfied with it.

In the future (probably when those plastic connector thingys break) I will invest more money and purchase a higher end system that includes all of the above missing features. But for now, I’m pretty satisfied.

3 Stars Decent, but very limited
The sound and DVD player are good, but the major let down is that speakers and sub-woofer all have the same length wires and proprietary connectors. The speakers close to the unit end up with extra wire, whereas the rear speakers are useless because the wiring is too short to get them far enough behind you to create surround sound.

You would literally need to sit right in front of your TV in order to have the rear speakers behind you.

Coby? Really? If your trying to save money you’re already off to a bad start. Besides the thousands of things that go wrong with them, the customer service are actually comedians seeing how upset they can get you before hanging up. If you came to these reviews to feel halfway okay about buying a COBY product, good luck. In other words, this product makes for a great gift for someone you dislike very much. The tape deck in my car plays dvd’s better than this.

Sincerly,

4 Stars Good buy for the price
The surround sound is great for the price. The system only has the dvd surround sound, there are no other inputs for sound to be directed to the surround sound. DVD player ONLY! The wires for the front right and left speaker are a tad short. This would make a good surround sound a starter.

The product arrived faster than they said. Very happy with the product. Could have come in some type of packaging, not just the original box, if left by UPS, etc, someone could have taken it from front entry because there was nothing to cover what it was. Otherwise, very happy with seller.
