Sherwood 210 Watt Stereo Receiver RX 4105

Sherwood 210 Watt Stereo Receiver RX 4105

Unlike the budget stereo receivers now flooding the entry-level price points at dealers across the country, the Sherwood RX-4109 is designed and built in-house with the same quality and attention to detail the company has been bringing to its audio gear for the last 50 years. With 105 Watts RMS per channel, phono section, binding posts, a versatile remote control and switching for two pairs of loudspeakers, the only thing that bespeaks the word “budget” about the RX-4109 is its modest cost.

5 Stars Sherwood Receiver
I needed a receiver with a phono/turntable input. This works well with my Sony turntable for digitizing my vinyl records. A lot of product for the money. It was delivered promply.

1 Star Made in china…
The receiver lacks flexibility if you want to connect speakers with less than 8 ohms. The remote control was a joke, almost like a toy and it didn’t work at all with the unit. The manual doesn’t explain very much either. It had some humming once turned on. The volume knob would jump from levels so I had to turn it very gently to get the volume that I wanted. I regret buying this brand. Next time I will save more and buy something (hopefully) not made in china if I can.

4 Stars An Inexpensive Surprise – Sherwood RX-4109
I’m an old audiophile, dating back to when “MacIntosh” was not the name of a computer. It was the company name of the most prestigious of hi-fi components. What dismays me is that today’s manufacturers of audio equipment (some of them well known brands) rely on the ignorance of the consumer when it comes to audio specifications; and they can get away with it because there no longer seems to be any standards for those specifications. For example, a manufacturer can claim that an inexpensive 15 watt amplifier puts out 500 watts, and that amplifier actually can accomplish that feat at “peak” output at one frequency with very high distortion. Match that amplifier up with very efficient speakers; and voila…you have harmonic cacophony now called a “boom box.”

Enough of that….I was looking for an inexpensive, basic, but decent stereo receiver for one large room. Surround sound annoys me. (When you attend a live orchestral concert, the orchestra is in front of you.) After comparing many (some for almost twice the price), I decided on this Sherwood for less than $100. I was apprehensive that its low price might reflect its quality. I was wrong. It is solidly built. I am running acoustic suspension sealed cabinet speakers (no need for a separate bass woofer) that require 20 very clean watts each just to get any response out of them. This amplifier, turned up one third, drives them more than adequately with no discernable distortion…almost as good as my old top-of the line Marantz. What’s more you can use this as a base amp by pressing a button on the front (”TON DIRECT”…somewhat cryptic) and disabling the tone controls so that the amp runs flat, allowing for a separate equalizer. (The manual isn’t very good about explaining this. In fact, the manual isn’t very good about explaining anything.)

Another thing…with 8 ohm speakers, this amp doesn’t even get warm, so you can pile stuff on top of it (with a little space in between) without worry.

The FM tuner is fine enough. The AM tuner (at least at my location) is above average, which is unusual in even $400 receivers.

This receiver has a phono input for those who still listen to the pops, the static, and the warp distortion of vinyl. All the other inputs are at the same impedance, so you can hook up anything else to any input regardless of its label, i.e. your dvd player can be plugged into the “tape” input. Unfortunately, if you do so, “TAPE” will be displayed on the front fluorescent panel when you play your dvd.

Don’t expect a lot of toots and whistles; but you can expect a good solid product with performance factor that far exceeds its modest cost.

Would I recommend this receiver to a friend? …yes and no. Most of my friends do not know a thing about audio and believe everything they read…which doesn’t say much about me and my choice of friends.

4 Stars I wish it had mono
Great product for the price but wish it had a mono selection because I am using it with two-way in ceiling speakers, one per room. I will have to create mono files with itunes so that the music sounds ok using only one speaker.

5 Stars Great sound and construction on a budget
This receiver is one of the bangs for the buck for any hi-fi enthusiast. For such a low price, you can get sound quality that rivals most home theater systems that cost much more money. Less is definitely more in this case. The discrete amplification really helped improve the sound quality of well mastered music media, and the radio signals are decent on stations that do not use lots of compression. The option to add 2 pairs of speakers is a plus so that you can use it in a smaller room or a larger room and the sound still feels like it surrounds you with the dynamics fully intact. The phono input is a must for me as I have a huge vintage vinyl collection, so that was a selling point for me. Since the sound quality and the build quality are both excellent, I don’t end up having to upgrade to anything else.

4 Stars Great
Great sound system. We recently purchased one of the new LED Samsung TV’s. This works great with it. The bass is a bit loud, so we had to go into the menu and change that. Other than that, it’s a great DVD player as well. I don’t think anything can get any higher quality than this.

5 Stars Great Savings for the best product
I had just purchased the 52″ SAMSUNG Plasma Flatscreen and looked at the Samsung Home Theater sound bar at Best Buy ($499.00 on sale)very pricey and comparison of other bar’s there is no comparison in the sound of the Samsung. When I installed my Flatscreen the sound was tinny, TV sound. Back to Best Buy the price on the Home Theater sound bar was back at the $699 original price, but now I was convinced I needed it-inflation. I Googled the Home Theater Sound Bar and saw that Amazon had 2 for sale open box. I was not sure that I should, but I bought the sound bar system after reviewing the return policy. 3 days later I got the bar. ( I don’t know was “open box” It was perfectly packaged.) I mounted it on the wall and using the optical cord and the HDMI cords all purchased from AMAZON I think now I had spent $12 on three cords.(great cords-gold plated). It worked the first time and I haven’t looked back it has almost been a month. The Sound is very good. the base is a little loud and I need to figure how to control the boom. You need to be patient with the DVD. What a look on my wall and no visible wires. Also the SAMSUNG customer service was very patient in helping me to understand the combination of TV and Sound Bar. Thanks Amazon. You saved me $500 dollars.

5 Stars home theatre
oustanding unit when we paired it with our samsung 50″ plasma 1080p wireless. very good sound quality and many options on the types of output so you can customize the sound to your liking.

1 Star Design Flaw and No Customer Service
This item has a design flaw, a very delicate plastic sliding cover over the DVD port that breaks very easily. Item broke after only a few months and when I tried to contact Samsung to have the unit repaired under warranty they refused, saying the break was the result of my negligence. They do not have home repair or local service, and insisted I ship the item for service. I took the item back where I bought it and the plastic cover on their floor model was also broken. Brandsmart refunded my purchase price, meanwhile I am still waiting on a call back from Samsung “case study”. Samsung has the worst customer service I’ve ever seen in my life. I would highly recommend buying another unit. This one is flawed and if/when it breaks Samsung absolutely will not stand behind their product.

5 Stars Works Great!
I have this hooked up in my media room to my 72″ DLP from Samsung and the sound is perfect for the room. It is very easy to set up and it works great.

4 Stars Good Home Theater
This item is definitively worth the money you pay for it. Although it’s not top-of-the-line, the sound quality is good and the wireless speakers are very convenient. I would recommend this system to anyone who is not a hi-fi maniac, but still likes a good surround system.

5 Stars Very Pleased!
We have been extremely pleased with our home theater system. The surround sound adds a completely new dimension to our movie experience. From the rear speakers to the subwoofer and main speakers everything works better than expected.Panasonic has done a great job.

5 Stars Sounds Great
This Panasonic DVD home theater system is great. The sound is clear and beautiful. It was easy to install, as an addition to my HD Panasonic Television. The system arrived fast.

1 Star Feel Ripped Off!!!
WOW!!! I don’t know how to begin this review without saying how disappointed and ripped off I feel. First I would like to let all potential buyers know that this is a good looking system on the picture and in person except in person the subwoofer is one unfinished side that doesn’t allow you to turn it facing the room (super weird). Two days into receiving and setting up the equipment the DVD player displays a message “Chngr Err”, take note I’ve only played one DVD to set the system up and to try it out. It was only after I had this problem I went back to read more of the negative comments to discover others had the same exact problem I’m having (interesting). The seller claims the items are not re-furbished and are truly brand new. I think they are being dishonest and it’s going to come back and bite them. I’m just saddened by the co$t of this product, yet it’s so not the quality of product it should be. Let’s not talk about the DVD trays that are stacked instead of the usual carousal tray. The sound is O.K. and excellent for my apartment space as I don’t want to blow my neighbors out of the window.

I contacted the seller and still haven’t heard anything back to what I should do. I’m probably just going to send this system back, get a refund and spend the extra money on the Bose system which I know is excellent quality.

1 Star Disappointed customer
I bought this unit last Dec. when I purchased my wonderful Panasonic Plasma. However, I’m am not at all impressed with the Panasonic home theater system. The unit doesn’t have enough power to push the rear surround speakers – even when adjusted all the way up. You also can’t adjust power of front surround speakers, only the balance. The rear surround speakers aren’t completely remote. They have to be wired to the rear remote sensor, and the wire isn’t long enough to place the speakers well. Front speakers also not remote. The Remote control isn’t at all user friendly for the normal or inexperienced user. If you’re a/v savvy, it’s ok. This is my bedroom unit. I wouldn’t recommend this product for ANY room. This review is form an old granny complaining of not enough power. I can only imagine how a younger consumer would feel about it.
