5 Stars Never Go to the Movies Again!
I have owned this projector for almost a year. If you look around, then you can likely purchase it for about $1100 BEFORE a combination $100 AND free spare lamp mail-in rebate (I cannot overstate the peace of mind that having a spare lamp creates).

I put about 90 hours on the lamp that came with the unit and have subsequently put about 500 hours on the rebate lamp (I put that in immediately to make sure it worked. My original lamp is now my back up). I have yet to buy a screen (that day is hopefully coming quickly). Therefore, I have my picture thrown on an off-white wall painted with flat paint. I currently have my picture size set at 120″. I used to have it set at 135″ but I found 120″ to be the sweet spot for me in terms of having a big enough picture that was still sharp and crisp.

Despite my lack of a screen, the picture I get is insane for the price I paid. The colors pop (especially in Living Room mode) and HD material is amazing. DVD’s look good. Blu Ray is a must. There is a caveat. Because the picture is bigger, flaws in source material will be magnified. I notice a distict difference in the sports broadcast by ESPN, ABC, and Fox versus NBC and CBS. NBC and CBS are markedly better. This, however, is due to the source material and not the projector. But I digress.

The projector can handle some ambient light. However, the fact that I am projecting on to an off-white wall and the absence of a screen hampers my projector’s performance in this area. Despite this, I often still watch stuff with a low-light lamp on so my kids can play in the room at the same time. The menu system allows the picture to be customized to your viewing preferences. If you have different preferences for different lighting scenarios or even different preferences for the type of content being watched, then multiple settings can be stored and easily accessed.

I wish I could give it 4.5 stars because it lacks 2 HDMI inputs and the fan is audible in high power modes (but not distracting). The warranty is great and Epson offers overnight replacement.

The bottom line is this; 1080p is best, 720p is sufficient for most (I sometimes wonder how much better 1080 could look). This projector has gotten excellent expert reviews. If you have a room that is suitable for a projector, DO NOT spend $1300-2500 on a “small” 46-58″ LCD/plasma. If you do some research and shop around, this projector, a decent screen, cables, a good receiver and speakers can be had for the same $2500. Reserve the LCD flat panel for the bedroom. Purchase this projector and never go to the movies again.

5 Stars Great projector!
Great projector… have it connected to an Onkyo TX-SR805 receiver and a set of Yamaha surround sound speakers. My cable TV, DVD’s, and HTPC play wonderfully on it! Great purchase and a great alternative to the $3000+ 1080p projectors.

5 Stars An outstanding experience
Manufacturer of the LCD panels used by most companies in their Home Theater projectors, until recently Epsons own offerings had remained lackluster. Their focus was mainly on high lumen, low contrast projectors for business and education, however, that has changed. With the introduction of their current line-up, Epson has unleashed an excellently valued 720p projector, capable of delivering a high quality big screen experience that will wow friends and family.

There is nothing like being able to watch your favorite movie on a 100″ screen. I enjoy watching Blu-Rays on my PS3, but DVDs look great too. Playing Call of Duty 4 occasionally is also a thrilling experience, with rich colors, depth and great shadow detail. If you haven’t experienced a modern high def projector and value video entertainment, you owe it to yourself to check it out. Its just light years from the washed out colors of 5 years ago. Its very watchable in all but the brightest lighting conditions and, in my view, produces a more satisfying picture than Plasma or LCD sets.

Before I purchased this model, I performed extensive research on the offerings available, reading every single review I could find and you just cant go wrong with either this or the Panasonic AX200. I opted for this one because of the slighter better colors and fewer complaints about problems from existing owners. The Panasonic offers a little more lumen output, but the Epson is more than bright enough.

If you have a little more cash, I would recommend the EPSON Powerlite Home Cinema 1080UB, as it is a superior projector not only in resolution, but in colors and black level, although it does cost over twice as much. For its price and the experience it offers, this projector is a steal and is guaranteed to offer hundreds of hours of great entertainment.

Final thoughts: my room is mostly reflexive white, and light does bounce back to the screen compromising black levels a bit. if you can, opt for matte colors.

4 Stars one of the best 720p projectors!
I bought this PJ elsewhere (not at Amazon) for $1149. This is my third digital PJ and the best unit so far. I started out about 12 years ago with the old heavy CRT beast. CRT is a rapidly dying breed and the pix quality has improved with digital PJ’s they are no longer worth the hassle (IMO).

The new Epson is much brighter then my old Panny PTL 500u (800 lums)which I’m replacing. Sharper cleaner pix with more detail in black areas as well as brighter areas. Blacks are very good with HD and good quality SD sources but not with so so quality SD (most cable channels). HD and full bandwidth off air SD look great! Blacks are as good as some low end DLP (under $2000)units with the dark chip 3. You won’t get the inky like blacks but will not be a distraction from movie either.

If you need to offset from center this is the unit for you. You can set the lens shift one full pix up or down and about the same side to side. You will need to sit about 1.2x screen size back to avoid seeing the pixel structure better know as SDE. I have a 100″ screen and pixels began to disappear about 10 to 11 feet back (102″ to 132″)thus the 1.2x.

Epson has great reputation for quality products and gives you a 2 year warranty if needed. I loved my Panny but with Panasonics ax100U issues I just can’t go with the Panny this time. I hope the 200u has been fixed but I’m not going to gamble with $1300 plus.

If you are like me and can see DLP rainbows then I highly recommend this unit. The only somewhat negative about this unit is the fan can be heard when not in low power cinema mode but does not disturb viewing experience. In low power (cinema modes) unless unit is right by your ear you probably never know it’s on. The high power mode is a little less noisy then a computer fan to give you some idea. If you have forced air heat (I do) then the air rushing from the ducts will make more noise then this PJ in high power mode. Could use a second HDMI input.

The picture quality and brightness is superb and you’ll be very happy with the quality of this unit. You may also want to look at the Sanyo Plv z5 for it has good reviews but is much dimmer then this unit. In a light controlled room that should not be an issue. Reviews by the so called experts put this unit near the top of the LCD pack and Epson customer service is by far better then Panasonic. Sanyo I have never had to deal with so can’t say .

This is one of the better 720p PJ’s on the market at present and you’ll be happy with the PQ of this unit.

4 Stars Satisfied – does all that I want it to do
I’ve owned this for a month now, and have used it for about 30 hours of video and computer browsing. I was concerned about the rainbow effects mentioned by other reviewers, but I haven’t discerned any in my time with it.

Didn’t think i’d use the remote, but is convenient to change the inputs, aspect ratios (16:9 to 4:3 etc.) and the brightness / contrast. The bulb meter is pretty convenient to track usage of the bulb.

Overall, a great buy for the price!

5 Stars As promised
I had to do a lot of research before buying since this was my first projector. For the money I don’t think you can find any better; bright, crisp, easy to use, simple installation.

This projector is used to project old movies and art on a concrete wall and the images come out incredible.

I would definitely recommend this to anyone.

5 Stars Excellent projector for the price
I really have no complaints with this projector. The picture is crystal clear with bright, rich colors, the fan is much quieter than my old Sharp projector, and the bulb is bright enough in “low” mode to even watch during the day in my living room. I have yet to need to turn the brightness up to “standard”.

The rainbow effect is not nearly as bad as I was lead to expect from other reviews. I only really see it if I dart my eyes back and forth quickly, but during normal viewing I don’t notice it at all.

I can’t comment on bulb life as I’ve only put about 400 hours on mine, but so far so good.

All in all, I’m very pleased with this projector and would certainly buy it again.

5 Stars HC1600 is Awesome!!
I had an older non-HD projector before this, and worked it to the bone… so when I switched to the HC1600, it was another world. It has to be the best bang-for-your-buck HD projector out there. It is very quiet, and the color is great, the ‘low’ lamp mode is slightly less bright, but will extend the life of your lamp by 50% or more; I use it in the ‘low’ mode. I have it connected to my computer and to my XBOX360 and it works beautifully.

I have never used a projector with higher specs, so I can’t compare to anything ‘better’. The keystone feature for both left-right and up-down movement is nice so that it does not have to be centered to the desired screen placement. Its bigger than an HDTV you would purchase for the same price, and easier to handle!! I would recommend this projector to anyone who wants to have a home theater in their house.

5 Stars Best TV Experience Ever
I use this projector as my living room TV. It provides 100+ inches of HD quality picture, and hooks up easily into a cable/satellite set top box. It has normal component inputs for HDMI and digital audio. The fan is noisy by default, but you can turn the bulbs to a lower setting and this slows down the fan and prolongs bulb life.

Keep in mind that you’ll probably want some sort of a home theater receiver that can handle multuple video and sound inputs. The projector only has inputs for one video input (2 if you count the additional HDMI). You need some kind of external speakers. It’s a great system and so far has been a good buy.

5 Stars Great little machine great big picture!
We bought this in a panic to show a video presentation at a banquet after the school projector was found to be too problematic.

Fingers crossed, we set this Epson Movie Mate 55 up in front of a 110 inch screen of white photo background paper, plugged in a computer speaker set with sub woofer, turned it on and stuck in a DVD. WOW! It was awesome. From 100 feet away the picture was bright, clear and just stunning. The sound was awesome as well.

This player performed flawlessly! The DVD player makes it all worth the not too expensive price! Banquet saved.

My husband plans on using this to view music video DVDs outside in the summer time on the 110 inch screen. He thinks the picture is better than our big screen TV. And its way more portable.

Pros: compact, light, has sound, good video, no computer needed, good remote control, good settings for different lighting situations, great picture. Quiet Cons: none so far.

Highly recommended.

3 Stars Okay but could be a little better
I bought this item with the idea of using it for presentations. I don’t mind that I have to create slides as jpeg files instead of just creating a PowerPoint. What I do mind is that so far I can’t figure out if there is a way to turn off the automatic slide show where it won’t auto advance the slides.

I also don’t care for the fact that the owner’s manual is on cd so it can’t be taken along to deal with those inevitable technical difficulties. At $650, and more elsewhere, you would think Epson wouldn’t be so cheap on user’s manuals!!!

I think with a little tweaking and some good instructions, this product would be a dynamite seller for those who travel and do slide presentations. The fact that you can just take along this device and a thumb drive without having to lug a laptop along is great. However, the slide options need to be enhanced to offer more user friendliness.

I called Epson customer service and was told that no there is no way to turn off the auto slide transition. I would have thought this would be a no-brainer!!

I did figure out that you can hit pause and it will pause the slide show but you have a nice ugly pause symbol on your photo.

Also, sometimes the machine seemed to have a mind of its own and forward without being manually un-paused. Another thing that would have been nice is to be able to go back a slide if you wanted to without having to go to the menu….of course this machine isn’t meant to be used for presentations apparently, although if Epson had been smart they would have made it more user friendly for this purpose.

3 Stars Be cautious.
I wrote a scathing review of my experience in purchasing this product, at first, when Electronics Expo, the Amazon-vendor, would not accept a return on this product. My decision to return it was based immediately on observing the “screen door” appearance (resolution)compared to another DLP model a friend let me borrow and try. Also, the zoom feature wasn’t as good. Having said that, though, the convenience of this design, with the DVD player and sound built in, is a very nice thing, and in the end, I decided to keep it and make use of it for that reason alone. I also got an email and phone number from Electronics Expo trying to make good on the deal. The rep was reachable by phone, and tried to make me happy. I recommended they find a way to say “you may not return this item if you purchase it” show up somewhere on the cart check-out page before you click “complete purchase.” So, let the buyer beware.Epson MovieMate 55 Portable 3LCD Home Theater Projector with Built In DVD Player

5 Stars Why Buy a Big TV?
The Epson Movie Mate is a tremendous product. Instead of purchasing a large screen LCD or plasma television, I opted to go this route. Let’s face it – these days, everything is online. Hook your laptop right up to this bad boy and grab your instant play Netflix or check out the latest offerings on Hulu. It’s absolutely amazing! The contrast ratio on this puppy is only 1:300 but it’s all you need. Consider that a commercial theatre is usually just 1:150 – why would you need 1:1000????

5 Stars So far, so good
I got this projector about a week ago and here’s what I can say so far

1. The Model 55 is very easy to set up. The Quick Start user’s guide is very good and it took me about a minute after I got it out of the well-cushioned package to show a movie on DVD.

2. Everything, including the PC and TV inputs, worked flawlessly.

3. The device is very portable with carrying handles built in

4. Controls on the remote are predictable and logical. I spent little time referring to the user’s guide.

5. The video quality is quite good and almost up to TV LCD quality

6. Having stereo loudspeakers in the unit works very well and makes the system very portable. Sound quality is reasonably good.

It’s too early to tell about reliability, but right now it looks like Epson has a hit on its hands. It’s priced right and easy to use.
