3 Stars Help me…worked with XP, failed with Vista
I followed every direction down to the last bit, I worked several hours to make this work with my Vista laptop but never got even one sound to play. Every time I plugged into the USB port, a red circle with white cross popped up over the speaker icon in the system tray. When I clicked play on the Windows Media Player the media player placed a red x next to the first five tracks. I tried every conceivable combination and permutation of settings and variables and nothing worked. Veeeery frustrating. And Creative Labs support is virtually and actually non-existent.
I have an old XP laptop and it instantly worked perfectly with Windows Media Player. But I have no music or music subscriptions on the old machine.
If I cannot get help, it’s coming back Amazon, then you can sell it to someone else.
4 Stars delivers good sound. but
I think this is definitly worth the money to play pretty good quality music directly and wirelessly from your computer. Only issue is a hum that plays when music turned up high, for the most part however plays great. You just plug it in and it works.
5 Stars Very Good Product
This is not a glam product. It simply does what it is supposed to do and does it very well. One can set it up in two ways; either as a base for remote speakers or as a portal for wireless surround sound. Either way it works well. Signal is superb with no interference. I set the Xmod up for remote speakers and plugged it right into my audio card. I then attached the front right and left jack into the base unit to recover my computer front speakers and another set of speakers (actually two pair of L&R) attached to the remote unit for the bedroom. So now whatever is playing on the computer in stereo (Media Player, Rhapsody, etc.) plays in the bedroom too.
The Xmod could be set up for surround sound by plugging into a computer USB port. It self configures. I tried it and it worked fine.
3 Stars Updated – upgrade to 4 stars
I first rated this product at 3 stars, with some issues to work through, but have discovered the issues were with the music source, not with the system. I was getting intermittent stutter – but it persisted when I hooked up the speakers directly to the computer. I think I’ve got a problem with the computer now, not this system. (Traveling, with a sub-notebook I don’t use much.) I can’t wait to hear how it sounds at home, transmitting music from a better computer to a “big” stereo system.
If your primary interest is just pumping music from one place in the house to another, you’ll probably be pleased with the XFi wireless transmitter and receiver. My first trial with the system has been very good. The setup with an XP machine is neglible – plug’em in and play music. As one reviewer said already, it was more work unpacking the system than hooking it up and making it work. This was perhaps the simplest set up possible.
Sound quality is surprisingly good with a pair of Bose Companion 2s playing mp3s from a netbook, with no special effects. I do not expect much from the “crystalizer,” I just wanted to be able to get music 30 feet from the source without wires.
The addition of an external USB soundcard was a surprise – I didn’t understand that from the package, and it is a plus. The ability to run powered speakers off of the transmitter is also nice – you don’t lose the local computer output, it goes off-board to the transmitter. It only makes sense but I was wondering how I’d hook up the computer speakers once I plugged in the transmitter if I didn’t use the USB cable but came straight off the speaker output.
I’d give this product 5 stars if the remotes were better. They are pretty much useless beyond 12 feet, and I’d give up the supposed “enhancement” (fake surround and smoothing of digital waveforms) of audio quality in exchange for RF remotes so you can hide the units.
I bought this strictly for the transmitter/receiver functions, and I am happy with that. If that was all the product promised for the approx. $90 I spent, I’d rate it 5 stars.
The possibility of interference between this system and a network maybe troublesome. It may mean some careful consideration to unit placement and wires to and from the unit, the computer, and local speakers at the computer. But, I’d like this product even for non-computer applications like sending music from the downstairs stereo to the upstairs bedroom if it doesn’t work out at my desktop.
Because it promises some mumbo jumbo and the remotes are only really useful for volume control at little more than arm’s length, I’ll temper it to 4 stars. If your sole desire is to throw some music to another room, this is a cool way to do it – you might give it 5 stars as others have. I don’t think you could possibly go wrong for under $100. You’ll get way better sound than a pair of typical wireless speakers for the same price.
If some tweaking and experimentation at home with Winamp gets the pause, skip, and replay buttons to work from one room to another, I might actually be thrilled with this purchase.
5 Stars Works Great!
This product did exactly what I wanted it to do – play the music from my Vista PC on my audio system in the family room. It worked right out of the box with no hassles. Hook up to my audio receiver was simple and straight forward; you will need to provide your own cable. I plugged the transmitter into a USB port on my PC and turned it on. I started Windows Media Player and immediately had music coming from my family room audio system. It’s that simple. I was impressed with the sound quality with the X-Fi circuitry turned on. It did nicely improve the sound quality of my MP3’s and WMA recordings. The transmitter and receiver are identical in appearance and take up very little space. Having two remotes included was a nice touch.
